The roots of the Toronto Music Experience trace back to 2018, when its future founding directors partnered with the Downtown Yonge Business Improvement Area on walking tours, heritage plaques, wall murals, and —most significantly — the Friar’s Music Museum, all celebrating Toronto’s music history.
TME grew out of that work, especially the small but mighty Friar’s — tucked into the unlikeliest of places, the flagship Shoppers Drug Mart near the Toronto Eaton Centre. There, two acclaimed exhibitions explored the history of music on Yonge Street and Caribbean music’s impact on the city.
Since launching as a registered non-profit charity, TME has staged a Caribbean-themed companion concert at Massey Hall and unveiled a third exhibit at Friar’s celebrating trailblazing women in Toronto’s music scene.
All three TME exhibits have been nominated for Heritage Toronto Awards in the Public History category.
